This workshop will be led by Fatawu Sayibu, Culture Bearer and Artistic Director of Tiyumba! The focus will be on two iconic drums from the northern region of Ghana. The first is the Dagbamba lunga (or “talking drum”), and the second is the Gung-gong (the bass drum that accompanies the talking drum). Participants will learn about the drums, their history, and how they are used by the Dagbamba tribe. Fatawu will teach playing techniques and the repair and maintenance of the instruments. This is a very unique opportunity, the first time that the WDC is partnering with an expert for this instrument!
Prerequisite: Drums will be provided, but pre-registration is required to ensure that enough instruments are available for all participants.
Workshop Location: WDC Studio
Cost: $40
Leader: Fatawu Sayibu, Artistic Director of Tiyumba and Culture Bearer
Fatawu Sayibu is from the northern region of Ghana and comes from a drumming family; his traditional dances and use of the talking drum tell the stories of his culture, country, and people. Fatawu is a performer, a teacher, a choreographer, and a mentor to the children in his community, as well as his students here in the U.S.
Fatawu is the founder of the Tiyumba foundation to provide youth in Tamale, Ghana, with education and an understanding of their unique heritage. The school creates a safe space for children by providing classes, Individualized attention, music, and dance. Tiyumba means “let’s love them” in the native Dagbani language of Ghana.
